Black Mountain calls itself the little town that rocks, and it earns it: White Horse Black Mountain is one of the best listening rooms in the mountains, Pisgah Brewing runs an outdoor stage all summer, and the Cherry Street and State Street galleries and shops fill a walkable few blocks under the Seven Sisters ridge. It's fifteen miles east of Asheville and feels a world quieter. The Lake Tomahawk loop is the town's living room — summer concerts on Thursday evenings, and the tailgate market on Saturday mornings.

The big weekend is the Sourwood Festival in August. LEAF, the twice-a-year music and arts festival at Lake Eden — the same lakeside camp where Black Mountain College ran its experiment in the 1940s and '50s — held its last edition in October 2025; LEAF Global Arts closed in 2026, and the Lake Eden Reunion (October 16–18, 2026) picks up the tradition on the same ground. Montreat is up the valley; Swannanoa is next door and, with Black Mountain, took some of the hardest hits from Helene in 2024 — some businesses are back, some aren't, so check before you go.
