Brevard is the small town at the door of Pisgah National Forest — Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, and the Davidson River are all a ten-minute drive up US-276, and DuPont's big three waterfalls are the other direction. Transylvania County calls itself the Land of Waterfalls and, for once, the nickname undersells it. The town's other mascot is the white squirrel, which gets its own festival every Memorial Day weekend and its own protected status in town limits.

The cultural anchor is the Brevard Music Center: seven weeks of orchestra, opera, and chamber music every summer in an open-sided hall in the woods, with students from across the country and headliners passing through. Downtown is a walkable few blocks — a bookstore, galleries, Oskar Blues' East Coast brewery on the edge of town — and it throws a Halloween party that's outsized for a town this size.
