Hendersonville is apple country — Henderson County grows most of the apples in North Carolina, and the whole town calendar bends around the harvest. The North Carolina Apple Festival takes over Main Street every Labor Day weekend, and from late August into October the U-pick orchards out toward Edneyville and Dana are the best cheap family afternoon in the region. Main Street itself — the one with the serpentine planters — carries the rest of the year: galleries, the Saturday farmers market at the old train depot, and free summer concerts downtown.

Flat Rock, five minutes south, is the cultural half of the pair: the Flat Rock Playhouse is the State Theatre of North Carolina and runs a season from spring through the holidays, and Carl Sandburg's farm is a national park site with goats. Out the back door: DuPont State Recreational Forest and its waterfalls twenty minutes west, and Sierra Nevada's East Coast brewery in Mills River.
