Waynesville has the best Main Street between Asheville and the Smokies — galleries, the Mast Store, a couple of blocks of restaurants, and the Frog Level district down by the tracks where the breweries are. It's the Haywood County seat and the town that hosts Folkmoot, the international folk festival that has brought dance troupes from around the world to the mountains every July since 1984. The HART Theatre runs a year-round season, and the courthouse lawn hosts street dances on summer Friday evenings.

Fall is the town's big season: the Church Street Art & Craft Show and the Apple Harvest Festival fill Main Street on October Saturdays while the elk are bugling out in Cataloochee Valley. Maggie Valley is fifteen minutes west with the ski area and the road to the park; Lake Junaluska is five minutes east with a lake walk and summer concerts.
